Work at Home Moms: Two Tips for Effective Time Management

Working at Home can be the dream come true for many moms. It allows spending a lot of time with children while still creating income. As most households now require both parents to work, choosing a work-at-home career is about the only way for mothers to stay with kids at home. The problem is that working at home creates new challenges unknown to the office work. They can be overcome in no time, but you have to know how to do it.

Your Work Schedule

First of all, create a daily schedule. As a mother and a businesswoman at the same time, you will have at least dozen tasks to do every day. Trying to keep everything in your mind, not forgetting about anything and juggling the tasks to keep them in the best order can wear off even the strongest mind. You have to write everything down every day and tick off every task once completed. A tip for creating such schedule: try to work mostly at those times when your children are at school. This way you can spend more time with them - you finish work before they come back and can take care of them.

1) Never forget about your husband! If you concentrate on work and children alone, this may have a severe negative effect on your marriage. Allow some evening and night every week for your spouse alone. 2) Use different colors to mark work-, children- and spouse-related activities every day. It will let you check real time how much time you spend on them. 3) Involve children in household issues. Ask them to help you clean, wash dishes and cook. This can give you an extra hour every day - at least!

Tip #2: Multitask

Multi-tasking is one of the greatest ideas for a work-at-home mom. Why? Because it saves time. If you can do two things at the same time, it'd idiotic not to do them. For example, you can easily be on the phone while cooking or waiting for a customer to appear. Time is money, but even more importantly, the less time you spend at work, the more time you have for yourself and your kids.

The devil is, as usual, in the details. We know the general rules, we just don't know how to use it in practice. Take a look at these two examples of multitasking - each of them can save you five-six hours a week. First off, remember to make a list of errands. This way you can do everything on your list when you're out. Otherwise you may rest assured that you will forget about something. Another example is doing the secondary tasks such as reading through the offers or emails while doing housework.

In order to avoid overworking, you may also consider using a timer. If it indicates that the time for work is over, simply stop it and schedule all remaining work-related tasks for tomorrow. Do not break your schedule - it is the only thing that stays between you and overworking that will inevitably lead to depression.
