Why is Data Recovery so Expensive?

Most of the times businesses and organizations with foresight make realistic provisions for such data loss eventualities in their budgetary allocations. A workable data recovery plan is an indispensable part of any successful business. Yet, time and again voices are raised that data recovery is an expensive affair and many a time, the subscribers end up feeling that the data recovery company hired by them charged them disproportionately, which is sometimes true. However, one cannot simply close one’s eyes to the reality that there exist only a miniscule number of data recovery companies, which are genuinely authentic and the reason that they have a favorable reputation is that they have made massive investments in their endeavor to provide quality data recovery services. A successful data recovery company has to make provisions for skilled technical staff, appropriate infrastructure, effective software and hardware tools, besides the continuous research and development efforts, which invariably add to the cost of recovery and make data recovery an expensive and reliable service. The major investments that a data recovery service has to bear are:

Clean Room Facilities

A data recovery company has to install mandatory high tech infrastructural facilities and a Class 100 Clean Room is an integral part of such a setup. A clean room is basically an artificially controlled environment which makes it possible to create suitable conditions for data recovery operations, considering the delicate nature of storage device like hard disks. It is a costly arrangement dependent on specialized filters such as Bag filters, Pre-filters and HEPA filters which have to be replaced on a regular basis. All the accessories, equipment, furniture, gadgets and stationary used inside a clean room are of approved standards and are mostly quiet costly. The technical staff has to be specially trained to teach them how to move about and work inside a clean room. It necessitates the services of approved contractors to service, maintain and sanitize a clean room. A clean room is not a one time investment but a continuous process that needs to be sustained till the company is in business. The size of a clean room varies with the requirements and stature of a company and in general, the larger the clean room, the greater is the cost of maintaining it.

Technical Staff

A successful data recovery company needs a highly skilled and experienced technical staff, which constitutes its very backbone. To my knowledge, there exists no formal organization or institution which imparts training in data recovery. The companies have to initially recruit fresh computer graduates and have to train them on their own. On an average, it takes a minimum of two years to train a novice into a skilled recovery technician. An astute data recovery expert is worth its weight in gold. Retaining the experienced staff is in itself a costly business. Merely having the recovery staff does not ensure the success of a firm. It is also necessary to have the requisite number of technicians to meet the peak season requirements and execute big data recovery assignments.

In-house Expertise

The market for storage devices is expanding at a fast pace and each day new storage media are being introduced with their own unique features and nuances. At the same time, many existing devices are becoming obsolete, though being used by a considerable number of institutions and organizations. Hence a data recovery company has to be constantly on its toes to keep pace with the latest developments in the market. They often have to rely on their ingenuity and personal initiative to develop suitable data recovery methods and procedures. It demands a considerable amount of effort and reverse engineering to meet these challenges. Hence, huge investments need to be put into developing in-house expertise and solutions.

Software and Hardware Tools

Each data recovery assignment is unique in itself and requires the available and sometimes customized tools to execute it. Hence an authentic data recovery firm has to retain an inventory of hardware and software tools and spare parts. Well informed customers often look for a wide range of data recovery solutions and ensuring customer satisfaction often necessitates investments in effective latest and vintage recovery tools.

Considering the above mentioned facts, no doubt, running a data recovery company is an expensive business. However, it justifies its price, so long as it is able to retrieve the customer’s precious data successfully.
