Ceramic plates and cups - that's what most people think of when they hear the word 'ceramics.' But in fact ceramic products are all around us - they literally fill our world. Come on a little tour with me - I promise that it will open your eyes. The first stop on our tour: the garage. Let's take a good look at the family car, truck or SUV that's parked there. You may not realize it, but every time you hit the brakes you may be using ceramics - as many vehicles use ceramic brake pads instead of the older asbestos- based types. They give reliable stopping power in all types of braking situations, keeping you and your family safe. How about another example: ceramic tile. What would the average home look like without them? You will find the in the bathroom (shower, walls and floors), in the kitchen (even for counter tops) and in hallways. When you have ceramic tile installed in your home, you increase it's value and beauty (particularly if it is hand-painted tile). Speaking of the home, another area where you will see ceramic products in the kitchen is in the 'equipment' used there: coffee carafes, teapots and ceramic tea strainers can be found there, right alongside of the usual ceramic dish or cup. Let's travel outdoors. When we do, what do we find around many homes? Why, ceramic garden stools and benches, ceramic garden pixies and gnomes, playfully lounging in the midst of our outdoor finery. And while we are outside, if we go around to the front of the home, we might see the house numbers, street name and even the family last name - a unique touch, one that tells everyone just who lives here. And these signs? All made of . . . You guessed it - ceramics. Now that we've finished looking around the house, let's head off to work - because all types of businesses use ceramic products today - everything from medical equipment to watches, to computers, contain piezo electric elements - which are made from ceramic materials. And ceramic ball bearings are now being made - you will find them in your child's skating board as well as a jet airplane engine. Yes, it's true, I think: Ceramic products can be found all around us, filling our world. Where would we be without them? Much poorer off, I think.
