What Attracts Us?

(i) Beauty

Though the perception of beauty is not the same, people transcending racial, cultural and continental boundaries are universally attracted towards the symmetry of facial features. However, facial features alone do not dictate physical attraction. People are also attracted towards body shapes that indicate fertility. For, procreation is one of the main aims of human existence.

(ii) Proximity and Similarity

The more we are exposed to the presence of a particular person, the more do we attract to them. Close exposure and interaction with people create a liking for them. Constant interaction coupled with similar tastes and interest binds well. Arguments and disagreement invoke displeasure and subsequent dislike.

(iii) Inherent and Innate Qualities in People

Some people take good care of their health; have a strong spiritual leaning and love children and pets. These tendencies exhibit positive innate attributes that attract others unconsciously.

What are Women attracted to?

Certain physical attributes and emotional qualities ingrained in men attract women. However, individual likes and dislikes are not the same in all women. Preferences are determined according to social circumstances. For example, women who have been through extreme economic hardship get drawn towards men who can afford great financial security. Other factors hold little importance.

But majority of the women share similar preferences that determine a mate selection. Their requirement can be categorised under two main headings- economic security and emotional support.

Economic Security

(i) Self-confidence

Self-confident men are singularly attractive. The poise and manner of handling social situations reveals this particular trait. And women are experts at reading body language. This characteristic determines if a man is capable of economically and emotionally catering to the needs of the spouse and the family.

(ii) Financial Strength

Finance is the basis of life. And people who are dysfunctional in this realm cannot be expected to perform better in other aspects of life. Expertise in financial matters is much appreciated in a man.

Emotional Support

Women expect emotional support from their partners. This does not mean that they are emotionally dependent. Emotional support is indicative of the love a man has for his woman. Emotional support can be offered by men who treat women as equals and enjoy life.

(i) Respect and Equality

Respect and equality are either side of the same coin. Women are equal to men and like to be respected accordingly.

(ii) Sense of Humour

A sense of humour determines the continuity of a relationship; for it removes the drudgery out of mundane routine in life.

What are Men Attracted to?

(i) Physical Beauty of a Woman

Physical attractions does not just refer to the facial features. It is the feeling of ease that results due to self-confidence. The beauty of the mind and body dictates the presence of a person, which is much more attractive to people than mere physical beauty.

Physical attraction is quite frequently based on emotional well-being of a person. People who are self-confident and poised magnetise others into liking them.

(ii) Changing Attitudes

Physical attraction is not the only quality that attracts men to women. With age relationship and expectations mature. Mentally mature men get attracted to women who complement them, emotionally, financially and sexually.

Why do We Become Unattracted?

• Good-looking people (of both sexes) are rated to be more intelligent, capable and kinder than people who are not so attractive. This quality of physical attraction attracts and unattracts people.


• However attractive a person may be, the inherent traits determine their attractiveness or likeability. Mean, rude or insensitive people, though blessed with good looks, are not found attractive by others. For face is perceived as the index of the mind.


• Lack of self-confidence tends to push people away from a person. This lack is apparent in every mannerism.
