Terrific Tenerife. One of the world's most popular holiday destinations . Over ten million guests go to Tenerife each year and return time and time again for what promises to be a memorable vacation that is worth every penny spent. Found just off the coast of North Africa, it is one of seven volcanic Canary Islands. Tenerife is the leading island for tourist numbers and income from those tourists. Born from a volcano, Tenerife was created as a result of several eruptions. They happened about three and a half million years ago and there has been no such activity since, although there was a recent earthquake measuring a Richter scale of 4 in the year 2002. Tenerife is split into two distinct geographical regions. In the northern territories it is very fertile and green with high humidity and rainfall whilst to the south it is much drier and sunnier. The majority of holiday resorts are concentrated in the south of the island in the region of Costa Adeje. It is here that the popular and ever growing Playa de Las Americas and Los Cristianos resorts are to be found. To the north, the town of Puerto de la Cruz is fast becoming a sought after holiday resort too. Here however, a considerable amount of thought has gone into not losing the history and traditions of the town and it is a perfect venue for a relaxing and peaceful break. Originally, up until the invasion of the Spaniards in the fifteenth century, the inhabitants of the island were a simple native peoples known as the Guanches. ‘Tenerife’ translates as 'white mountain' in the Guanches tongue. Down in the heavily developed south can be found the lively resort of Los Cristianos. One mile away from its noisy neighbour, Playa de las Americas, the holiday scene in the bay of Los Cristianos is preferred by those who enjoy a fun filled family escape. It's hardly believable that it wasn’t so long ago when Los Cristianos was merely a charming fishing harbour. The Tenerife of today is unrecognisable from the quiet unassuming island of 40 years ago. Although much has changed, we are lucky that much of Los Cristianos' charm has not been destroyed. As you stroll through the more ancient parts of town you will notice the traditional buildings provide a striking contrast to the more recent hotel developments. All this co-exists with unquestioningly one of the liveliest holiday resorts you can get anywhere on this earth. There are two superb bathing beaches, Playa de Los Cristianos and Las Vistas which can provide plenty of water sports fun as well as refreshment and accessibility. Don’t forget the black sand nudist beach of Rincon for that overall sun tan. Playas de Las Americas is where to choose if you're on the lookout for a lively holiday, packed with testosterone and adrenalin sports. It's almost impossible to comprehend that the Sahara Desert supplied all of that white sand on the beach and that this whole resort has evolved to satisfy the needs of a growing package holiday market. If you are seeking an easy going vacation, you could be more relaxed at Los Cristianos or any of the resorts along the island's west coast. The south of the island offers numerous things to do, which include the family fun-filled day of water games and dolphin shows offered by Aqua Land. Why not consider scaling Tenerife’s volcanic Mount Teide? Don’t worry, the volcano is definitely extinct and you can get to the top with the help of a cable car. Mt. Teide offers a great way to make the most of the island and beyond for the panoramic views of La Gomera, El Hierro and Gran Canaria are simply amazing. Throughout the years the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has served as a major port in the Atlantic, a role that it continues to satisfy today. Being the capital city as well as the biggest city on the island, life is more cosmopolitan here. The nightlife here is excellent with a wide variety of restaurants offering cuisine from around the world. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is especially exciting during the month of February when it plays host to the world renowned Tenerife Carnival.
