Today the swimsuit contest hardly raises an eyebrow. Over the years they have come in for their fair share of criticism but regardless they are now accepted as part of the good old American way. Even if some of us think the whole idea is distasteful, there are many that think quite the opposite. Such as the girls who enter the swimsuit contests.

On a positive note, the swimsuit contest has launched many a successful career in the fashion industry. Of course a great number of girls enter these contests solely in the hope that they will be recognized as an up and coming new star. Top swimsuit models have reached star status, and are now on equal footing with the extremely highly paid divas of the fashion industry.

Life is such that most of us look very average in a swimsuit. There are however, gorgeous girls that look simply stunning in a revealing bikini. For all of us with the bumps and lumps in the wrong places we can only look on and admire, knowing full well that a swimsuit contest is something that we would never in a million years contemplate entering.

Rather than focusing on who we are and maintaining a good level of health, a large number of the female population are left feeling inadequate. The swimsuit contest leaves us in no doubt as to what the 'perfect' body should look like. This is an absolutely impossible task to achieve for most of us.

Naturally there is always room for improvement in most people's lives. If viewing a swimsuit contest brings about better eating habits and a commitment to visiting the gym, or even taking an evening walk, then that is an excellent outcome. Swimsuit contests or even pictures of the new season's swimwear often has the ability to prick the conscience a little and wake us from our winter comfort zone.

The swimsuit contest has over the years served many purposes. One of the chief reasons for holding such a contest is for fund-raising or promotional purposes. Many charities have benefited handsomely from the monies raised by these swimsuit contests. It is hard to argue with this, particularly as the judges will generally tell you that the girls are being judged on their natural beauty, fitness and grace.

If you mention swimsuit contest, most people will instantly think of the Miss World and Miss Universe contests. In these titles, the swimsuit section used to be given far more prominence than it does now. Even though most people are in favour of it remaining, the emphasis has now been placed on more important attributes such as intelligence and communicating skills. The formal wear section is now regarded as just as important.

Even though it has been said that the swimsuit contest is exploitation of women to the highest degree, it has been around for a long time, and is going to be with us for a long time into the future. Most of us can never achieve the body that is necessary to win a swimsuit contest, but that doesn't mean that we are not the perfect ten inside.
