"It is as if evolution has built a safety device in our nervous system that allows us to experience full happiness only when we are living at 100% - when we are fully using the physical and mental equipment we have been given." ~Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi Are you living at 100%? Physically, mentally, spiritually, persuasively? The search for meaning and fulfillment and happiness are within all of us and yet out of reach for many. Why? Why do some people struggle with money, relationships, weight issues, and lack of motivation while others breeze through life with their paths laid out before them, living up to their full potential? I happen to believe that this is partially a result of a disconnect with our other-than-conscious selves. When we engage our other-than-conscious, phenomenal things can happen. I think a spectacular way of looking at your subconscious, or "other-than-conscious" mind is engaging it as your gentle giant, bashful genie, guardian angel, or whatever other name you're comfortable with. The gentle giant is a power capable of being harnessed to aid us in our pursuit of fulfillment. They've been with us since the minute we were born and since then, they've been learning by observing what it is we hear and do. This unconscious learning is being filtered into another part of you. As children we were conditioned whether that be through rewards, punishments, through school and experiences. Our other-than-conscious learned too--it learned to expect certain ways of being, creating metaphorical maps of what we could expect out of life based on this early conditioning. The subconscious has many roles, one of which is a powerful self persuader. Keeping us alive is one of the other-than-conscious mind's jobs. That's a big job. Another function is to keep us static, doing what we've been doing, doing what we've always trained it to do. . . this can create problems for us when we decide we want to make changes. Our other-than-conscious may have been sabotaged by receiving negative conditioning of 'I can't do it'. This is the portion of who you are that can make something a habit and then not have to keep remembering it. This can work for the positive or the negative. As we reframe the power of our other-than-conscious as a partner instead of something we hardly ever consider or communicate with, it can really make an enormous difference in our lives. So the big question is: how do we befriend this gentle giant? Well. . . how do you make any other friend? You gain rapport with them. It's that easy. I first heard this and thought, 'This is nuts. Talking to myself? Why do I have to make friends with myself?' But I'll tell you what. . . I've noticed a significant difference in my life. It's quite simple to gain rapport and befriend. . . have a conversation. Say, 'Hi buddy, I'm sorry to have neglected you for so long. I'd like for us to start working together and part of that includes breaking old patterns. I'd like it if we could increase our income, lose twenty pounds, and keep ourself organized.' Of course, ask for what you want and need, tailor it to what's going on right now. Or maybe, "I'd love it if my persuasion skills went through the roof and you are the one to really turn to in seeking an ally." Just try it and see what kind of results you get. Everything that you are, everything that you do, and everything that you have began with your intention to have it in one way or another is controlled by your other-than-conscious mind. All you have to do is tap into your persuasive power and your persuasion skills will naturally develop.
