Rising Divorce Rates

To find the real cause behind a divorce is very difficult and complex as there may be several factors that give rise to it. Poor communications, pre-marital relationship, infidelity, financial problems, changes in priorities, parenting style, lack of commitment, abusive behaviour are a few factors.

Common Reasons for Divorce

The reason behind couples opting for a divorce is varied. However, the most common ones can be:

1. Changing Lifestyle

Marriage does not have the same importance in people’s life as it had earlier. Couples who are married are so busy and absorbed in their daily routine that they hardly find time to share intimate moments. Work occupies the top priority and day to day petty issues remain unresolved.

In order to live happily after marriage, couples should understand each other’s expectations from the institution of marriage. When couples fail to understand the basic reason of a marriage, they end of up failing to make their marriage a success.

2. Empowerment of Women

Most of the women of today are financially and economically independent, and they are aware of their rights. With good education and few children they are not afraid to face a divorce.

In today’s world women no longer want to compromise on anything. Nearly 70% of the divorces are filed by women and the most common ground for divorce is infidelity by their partners. Women are not ready to give in to their unfaithful partners. They find no reason to stay with their partners after they discover that they have been cheated.

Woman gained economic power and independence after the Industrial Revolution. New amendments in the British Law have enabled the women to own family properties. In case of a divorce, women are awarded equal and just, financial and economic settlements.

3. Increased Life Expectancy

With the improvement in the standard of living, life expectancy of a common man has increased. Couples do not hesitate to divorce and re-marry even at the age of 60 and 70, since they feel that they too have a right to live happily. Moreover, what was considered a stigma and scandalous at one time has become a common lifestyle in today’s world.

4. Relaxation of Divorce Laws

The second half of the twentieth century saw major changes in the divorce laws. The Divorce Reform Act stated that divorce could be granted after 2 years of separation if both the couples opted for it and after 5 years if even one of them opted. Thus it became easier for people who wanted divorce on grounds of adultery and unreasonable behaviour.

The Matrimonial and Family Proceedings Act of 1984, allowed the couples to go for a divorce after only 12 months of marriage.

By providing benefits to single parents, the state benefit system in the U.K. encourages single parenthood. The implementation of “no fault” clause, which states that petitioner, need not site an apparent reason for filing a divorce, has further deteriorated the situation.

These laws made the entire procedure of divorce a child’s play.

Social Acceptance of Divorce

Many people were concerned about their image in the society and hence did not want to go for a divorce readily. With time, things changed and divorce became a common phrase in the society. It was no longer looked down upon and the stigma attached to it slackened, resulting in the increase in divorce rates.

Rise in Individualism

According to many researchers, the increase in the rates of divorce can be attributed to the fast changing society which has put the individual needs ahead of the family needs. People marrying at a young age tend to regret their decision-making ability in choosing the right partner. Whereas, the matured ones find out later, that they are unable to cope up with the responsibilities of a marriage. This leads to couples ending up in divorce.

Last Word

Divorce and re-marriage are incidents that are not in the best interest of our children. It leaves incurable and negative consequences on them. Family is an important part of society, and divorce is forcing this institution to die a slow death.
