Some people continue making wrong choices. For others, matters can be much more complicated as they meet the right person more than once. Finally, there are those who meet the right person, decide otherwise, and then make a u turn to come back again. Remarriage rates are higher in the UK than before, and are steadily rising. Out of all these hopeful people, a miniscule number re-marry their ex partner. For most it proves to be a case of committing the same blunder twice. The Fairy Tale of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor starred in eleven films together. Out of these, “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” secured an Oscar for Taylor, but none of the onscreen histrionics managed to catch the full range of emotions covered by this couple in their off screen romance. They met dramatically on the sets of ‘Cleopatra’, with Taylor in the lead role and Burton as Mark Anthony. On 6 March 1964, Taylor divorced her fourth husband Eddie Fisher and became Mrs. Burton just two weeks later. Their passion for each other was evident, as was their inability to co-exist as a peaceful couple. The directors they worked with cashed in on this, casting them as close to real life as possible, but never being able to measure up to their story. On 26 June 1974, they divorced after nine years of marriage. However, after a sixteen month break, they were back again in October 1975, as a remarried couple. This time it was more short-lived, and they parted on 29 July 1976. The story does not end here. In 1984 Burton died of a heart attack. One week later, the press caught Taylor at his grave in Switzerland. Though she hastily retreated to avoid the media, her grief was evident. Many of their fans still speculate whether a third remarriage would have happened if he has remained alive. Of course, the case is not very strong, given that none of Taylor’s many marriages have lasted, but she was definitely wildly in love with Burton. In fact, her amorous behaviour urged the Vatican to denounce her on grounds of “erotic flagrancy.” To date, they remain one of the most infamous couples of the world – a doubtful honour to their uncertain unions. Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson’s Long Journey Melanie Griffith was 15 and had all the makings of a siren when she moved in with Don Johnson. They waited till she was 18 before getting married, only to split within a year. This was in 1977. They were not yet ready to let go of each other though, and continued an on and off relationship until the late 1980s. Always in the news, sometimes for rather seedy reasons, the couple didn’t seem to be able to either live with or live without each other. It was definitely not a publicity stunt since it did take a heavy toll on both. Finally, Griffith and Johnson entered holy wedlock again in 1989. It was a turbulent seven year marriage, until they parted again in 1996, and seemed to finally decide to live apart. The Tragedy of Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner. Hollywood’s favourite nymphet Natalie Wood had her first date with Robert Wagner on her eighteenth birthday. After a year, they got married. This was in 1956, and they divorced in 1961. They met again in a party after exactly a decade in a story that sounds awfully like a script. Consequently, they remarried in 1972. Though they did have their tiffs, this was a rare celebrity couple who seemed to have made a success of their second attempt. One night in 1981, Natalie fell off their private yacht in a drunken condition and died. This was the same boat on which they had got married. Life, once again, had proved to be stranger than fiction. The Big Question So the big question is, ‘Do remarriages work?’ The statistics are definitely against it, but there are the likes of Nicholas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley who still want to try it out, despite the sad history of their predecessors. Unfortunately, there is no way to balance this equation.
