Premature Ejaculation is a common yet rather embarrassing complaint that has been affecting men for many generations. As yet, there is no certainty to what exactly causes it. It was once thought that the root of the problem was something lurking int he back of a man's mind - some deep seated concern about sex that affected his performance. Nowadays, it is thought that the cause of premature ejaculation is both due to psychological and biological factors. The problem is, medicine has not yet reached that state where they can identify with precision what exactly causes premature ejaculation for a specific individual. As a result, treatments for premature ejaculation have adapted a shotgun approach that addresses both biological and psychological factors. Also, there is the increasing belief that erection problems play some part in a lot of men's premature ejaculation problems. At last there is good news for sufferers. A host of treatments have been developed to successfully cure the condition and these include pharmaceuticals, psychological counseling and sexual techniques or exercises. The aim of these is to give a man better control over his orgasm and for most, a combination of techniques will give the best results. Here is an explanation of the signs, causes, symptoms and risks that can combine to cause the problem in men. You can use this to assess and judge your own current problems, or determine if you have any future potential risk. Signs and symptoms There is no hard and fast rule as to how long it should take for a man to reach orgasm, therefore we don't really know what is normal. Experts tend to agree that the definition of premature ejaculation is when a man reaches the point of ejaculation before he wants to, in most of his experiences. This may be either during masturbation or any other sexual encounter, though it may only be limited to experiences with other persons. Two types of premature ejaculation have been identified by experts: 1.Primary Premature Ejaculation -- If you have been suffering from premature ejaculation ever since you started having sexual encounters. 2.Secondary Premature Ejaculation -- If you have not always suffered from premature ejaculation, but only after you enjoyed previously satisfying sexual encounters without such problems. Causes Experts have not ruled out psychological causes as the sole reason but they have not reached the point where they can pinpoint specific causes in individual cases. However, there have been great strides made in treating the biological and psychological factors that cause the problem. There are four basic psychological causes that can cause premature ejaculation. These are: 1. Instances where climax has been rushed due to the fear of being caught in the act. 2. Where a man has rushed his sexual encounters due to strong feelings of guilt. 3. Men who suffer from erectile dysfunction and worry too much about whether they can stay hard throughout the sexual encounter. This may also establish a pattern where a man rushes to ejaculate while he still has an erection. 4. Men who get anxious , particularly about their sexual performance or other matters. In addition, there are also six basic biological causes that can lead to premature ejaculation. These are: 1.Abnormal hormone 2.Levels of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters that are abnormal 3.Abnormal reflex activity of the ejaculatory system 4.Some thyroid problems 5.Inflammation and infection of the prostate or urethra 6.Inherited traits Some doctors think that lifelong Primary Premature Ejaculation is most often a result of biological causes. In addition, some additional (but rare) causes of premature ejaculation can include the following: 1.Damaged nervous system resulting from trauma or surgery 2.Withdrawal from certain drugs - such as narcotics or anxiety drugs such as trifluoperazine. Risk Factors Finally, the risk of premature ejaculation can be increased due to some factors. These include: 1.Impotence -- Having erectile problems may lead to premature ejaculation. By some estimates, one of three men suffering from premature ejaculation also have impotence problems. 2.Health problems -- Some Medical conditions can make men feel anxious about sex, for example heart disorders may often compel men to rush through sex. 3.Stress -- Feeling stressed about other areas of your life can limit your ability to relax and lead to premature ejaculation. 4.Medications -- There are some drugs that can naturally cause premature ejaculation.
