Military Surplus Vehicles

Military surplus vehicles have been popular for a long time, and not just among army aficionados. The great thing about army surplus vehicles is that they are durable, relatively inexpensive, and easy to work on.

There are army surplus jeeps that date back all the way to the Vietnam War but are still in service. With a few simple tools, you can perform routine service on them yourself, making them great vehicles for hobbyists.

We had one of the Army Jeeps when I was a kid. It had been worked hard and was in need of much repair. There were many examples like this one that hadn't actualy been in combat.

The Jeep came from an army training camp, and had been treated to the roughest terrain they could find, it seemed, because it was knackered. It had a massive hole in the bottom and one of the wheel was about to fall off. But it was cheap to buy, and more importantly, cheap to fix.

Nowadays, it can be hard to find parts for these old and aging army surplus vehicles. Back then, however, it was pretty simple. Army outdoor surplus gear - no matter if it was a Jeep or a sweater - was affordable, practical, and well built.

Most of the parts we required, we got from a mail-order catalogue. The wheel and remaining parts we sourced from our local army surplus store. It wasn't long before we were able to start working on the Jeep.

The Jeep has been replaced nowadays by the much larger Hummer. The smaller sized jeep was easier to work on, hoist up, and most importantly it fitted comfortably in my dad's garage.

We spent most of the summer working on it, and just as we went into fall we had it running. It still needed some cosmetic work, but mechanically it was sound. We took it for a drive and it ran superbly and to it's credit, is still on the road to this day.
