Mallorca: an Ideal Holiday Destination

Whether you're looking for peace or adventure, Mallorca is the perfect place for a holiday. It's ancient and it's modern, it's tranquil and it's exciting, it's got mountains, it's got sea, it's got great food and great shops - there's something for everyone in Mallorca. I've been there in spring, summer and autumn and loved it every time.

Mallorca is best known by many as a magnet for British people seeking sun, sand, cheap booze and wild nightlife. If this is what you want, you can certainly find it, particularly in Magaluf and Palmanova, where it's high-rise hotels, discos and chips with everything. These are great resorts for stag and hen parties and hedonistic twenty-somethings who want to let their hair down. If this is your idea of hell, however, don't be put off! Mallorca has so much more to offer than this.

If you're looking for a quiet place to relax in the sun and not have to worry about anything, I'd recommend you base yourself in Puerto Pollensa and spend a lot of time on the beach there. Because the beach is so long, there's plenty of space for everyone and you've got restaurants, bars and supermarkets only a few steps from the sand. The swimming is lovely in the Bay of Pollensa and you're also well placed to explore the Tramuntana mountains, should you feel more energetic.

If you're into nature, you'll love the Sierra de Tramuntana, where goats roam freely and the views are amazing. Some of the rocky landscape looks as if a dinosaur might still be lurking there and the sea has that feeling of eternity about it. To the east of the island, you can see extraordinary underground caves and lakes, temples to the power and mysterious creativity of nature.

If you're active and sporty, there are countless pursuits you can enjoy in Mallorca. The golf is famously excellent; there's horse-riding, bike-riding and fantastic walks to do. And that's before you go near the water. As well as swimming in the sea, you can water-ski, paraglide, sail, snorkel, scuba-dive

Mallorca has a colourful history, which shows in the architecture, the food and the language. The Romans, the Goths, the Vandals and the Moors - as well as the English and indeed the Spanish - have all left their mark on Mallorcan culture. Do take in a couple of the excellent, informative museums while you're there.

For some more modern culture, there are a couple of particularly good art galleries in Palma and a thriving Cultural Centre in Andratx, as well as many smaller galleries and studios all over the island. There are also a large number of classical and folk music concerts and festivals throughout the year.

Eating and drinking in Mallorca are enjoyable experiences. Traditional Mallorcan cuisine is a colourful mixture of pork, seafood and vegetables, with plenty of top-quality olive oil. Although the tourist resorts cater for those wanting familiar British-style food, if you venture slightly inland and/or off the beaten track, you'll find restaurants serving Mallorcan food - and you're in for a treat! Make sure you try some locally produced wine with it too.

With frequent, cheap flights from almost all UK airports; easy, inexpensive car hire and a wide range of good-value accommodation to choose from, Mallorca is a very accessible holiday destination. Whatever your idea of an ideal holiday is, you're bound to find it in Mallorca.
