In all instances, man was trying to convey to his fellow men information about a given person, place or event. Thus, it was that we have hunting scenes recorded in the cave paintings of our ancestors and details of various royal and religious ceremonies recorded in the forms of paintings in palaces and temples. We have frescoes detailing battles, marriage processions etc. and specially ordered portraits of the royalty and the rich noble classes. All these efforts received a major boost with the invention of the camera. Camera The word camera is a derivative of the Latin word camera obscura. It was invented by an Iraqi scientist and later on improvised upon by two English scientists to make it portable. Over a period of several years many improvisations were made to the original machine and today’s cameras are a far cry from their original counterparts. In the present day, there is such a mind-blowing variety of cameras that it may take several pages to discuss the various different kinds of cameras available in the market. Listing their varied features will take additional space. One particular category of cameras that has come about and is distinct from others is the digital camera. Digital Cameras Digital cameras are electronic devices. Unlike the normal / more commonplace varieties of cameras they do not store images on photography films. On the contrary, the photographs in a digital camera are stored in a digital format. Of late, the digital camera technology has advanced so greatly that some of the devices are capable of recording not only photographs but sound and video pictures also. With their better features and constantly lowering of the sale price, the availability and consequent sales of the digital cameras are crossing those of the more conventional ones in several parts of the world. There are a variety of digital cameras. For example the digital video cameras, compact digital cameras, bridge cameras, single lens reflex cameras, range finders, professional digital cameras etc. The variety is manifold and each one has its own specific features that are of use to its operator. Digital Camera as Opposed to Conventional Variety A major cause of the popularity of digital cameras is their positive features as opposed to the normal cameras. To begin with, the normal cameras employ a film roll which needs to be developed into photographs after it has been used. In the digital cameras, one does not have to bother about such factors, as once the photograph is clicked, it is automatically stored in its digital memory. Besides the factor of having to buy a film roll in the first place and then getting it developed at a specialised place, there is a cost factor also. Purchase and consequent development of the film roll are additional costs, which are not required in the digital cameras. Thus, the day-to-day operations of the digital cameras turn out to be cheaper than the costs of everyday usage of the conventional film-based cameras. Another major factor for the popularity of digital cameras is the fact that one can see instant results. In the conventional cameras, one has to wait for the development of the film roll before he or she comes to know the end results of their efforts. On the contrary, the results can be instantly seen in case of the digital cameras. Besides the feature of being able to see instant results on the digital cameras, one can even download the photographs on to the computer and edit them. Of course, there is the possibility of clicking endlessly till one gets the desired results in a photograph. Drawback in Digital Cameras There is nevertheless one major drawback in the digital cameras. Just like all other media that use encrypted data, the digital cameras can also malfunction and lose their data. Like other devices of their category, they too are susceptible to loss of data owing to hardware or software / logical causes. In such a scenario, it is important for the operator to retrieve the data. This can be done sitting at home by the usage of an easy-to-understand ‘Do It Yourself’ software recovery programme. If this does not succeed or the pictures are too valuable, then one can take the assistance of a professional data recovery company.
