1. Short, very intense bursts of exercise are more effective than longer workouts for helping people get fit. This is great for busy people - if you only have 20 minutes, you can still get some benefits using interval based approach.

2. Losing weight is taking less energy in and burning more energy off. Food is abundant, portions are larger, and there are more processed foods, so we're eating a lot more energy - and more calories than our parents did. It's not easy to take a stand against bad food choices, to find time to exercise and to resist our animal instinct to eat whenever we see food, so make the effort to cut out the processed dense foods, sugary drinks and get active to shed the pounds.

3. Reward yourself - each time you achieve one of your mini goals, reward yourself with things like shoes, perfume, a manicure, a movie or something you enjoy rather than clothes. Save buying clothes till you reach your final goal.

4. Eat in controlled portions - it may be difficult at first, but with patience, your eating habits will change for the better. Plan to have 6 healthy mini meals a day to prevent carvings.

5. Interval training burns more calories. For beginners alternate one minute bursts of high intensity such as treadmill running with 4 minutes of low intensity walking. as you fitness improves, shorten your low intensity periods.
