A Labrador is a big, affectionate dog who loves to have fun. Sometimes he may take it overboard by jumping on you and everybody else around. Don't fret. This little habit is fixable with the right training methods. Now that we're looking into how to train a Labrador, let's take a closer look at the breed itself. Known as great working dogs and loyal pets, The Labrador is one of the most popular types of dogs in America. They are gentle, intelligent, energetic and good natured making them excellent pets. Labradors are known for their intelligence, their dependability and their obedience and because of this, they are fairly straightforward to train. It is important to realize, however, that Labradors are quite boisterous as well. They have a great deal of energy at their disposal and because of this, learning how to train a Labrador is essential. First, think about why your Labrador is jumping. If the dog hasn't seen you in while, say if you've gone to work, you'll soon realize that jumping is simply because he is so happy to see you. More seriously, however, some jumping is a bid for dominance and can easily get out of hand. When you begin training your Labrador not to jump on people, the key is to be consistent. You must discourage jumping in all instances. Pick a command and use it at all times to teach him not to jump. When your dog jumps on you, give him the command and then display with your body language how unhappy you are. Turn your back away, fold your arms and don't look at him. Essentially, this tells your dog that when he behaves in this fashion, you will not give him the attention that he craves. Give your Labrador positive reinforcement when he stops the jumping. Labradors love praise so let him know you're pleased with his efforts. Give him the reward of a big hug and pet him. The attention will be well received. Taking some time to learn about the dogs and some basic dog training steps will make the process of how to train a Labrador much more simple!
