At an early age, children show indications of a future reading success. Parents can determine whether their child is heading towards a successful reading development or not. There are indicators to predict the success of reading in preschool aged children. These indicators are also applicable for special needs children. First, the child must have the basic knowledge about books and reading materials. Second, the child must have mastered the alphabet. Third, the child must have basic knowledge on phonemes. These indicators will tell you whether your child is going to have success in reading. How To Gear Reading Towards Success It would be nice to see you child – especially for the case of the special needs children – on the right track towards reading success. How can you help your child develop reading skills like alphabet mastery and phoneme awareness? How can you introduce books and reading materials to him? The alphabet and phoneme should come along together. When you teach your children the letters of the alphabet, include the alphabet sounds. Teach the child the sounds of each alphabet. Sounds are vital in reading. When the child knows the corresponding sounds of each letter, he will be able to read on his own better. Before you start with reading instructions, introduce books and reading materials to your child first. Teach the child to identify the front and back of the book, how the pages are flipped, the pattern of reading, where to set their attention first, etc. This will also help develop book appreciation in the child. Why Predict Reading Success At Preschool Age? Why do you actually have to predict the potential reading success of your child? Prediction is important to identify early whether your child needs special help in reading. If you know earlier that your child is experiencing reading difficulties, then you will be able to give him the guidance and help that he needs. Early intervention and prevention is always advisable to prevent reading difficulties in children especially with special needs children. The preschool years of children are the best indicators of their future reading success. Reading achievement in school most often depends on the children’s knowledge in reading before they get to school. If your child is already a good reader before he enters formal school, he is already a few steps ahead of the other children. The preschool years are the foundation of learning and reading. The child needs all the support he needs to get through the preschool years successfully.
