Thank god for my wife, I love her to death, but this week she is literally a goddess. I have a reserved tee time at Desert Mountain - Cochise (a Jack Nicklaus course) with some buddies from my college years. We've kept in touch over the years and we'd planned this weekend for almost a year, I did NOT want to cancel, but my golfer's back was causing no end of problems. We'd planned a guy's weekend; playing golf, spinning tales, telling lies and betting (keep that quiet) on who'd win the next hole. My wife encouraged me to go on this trip believe it or not, maybe I should wonder why she wanted me out of town, but also help me to get my golfing back in shape. A dancer by trade the only golf she has watched is when she happens to come into the family room and someone like Tiger Woods is playing on TV. Back pain and Golfers Elbow are just two or the most common Golfing Injuries. Here are the other Top Ten, Shoulder Pain, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, DeQuervain's Tendinitis, Knee Pain, Trigger Finger, Wrist Impaction Syndrome, ECU Tendon Subluxation, Fracture of Hamate Bone. Back in my college days I was on the golf team and had PGA dreams. Turns out I had a better head for business and I definitely wasn't in Tiger Wood's league, still, I gave most a good run and won my share. And here's the kicker, not once during my time on the gold team, did I have any injuries (we'll forget about that one crazy weekend where we played the back nine at 2am... shhhhh), of course being nineteen and twenty years old may have been a factor. As I turned thirty the strain on my back seem to increase as I used my driver. Now that I am over forty, if proper exercise is not done I am going to have bad back problems. My wifes advice is very important if you want to keep playing often and want to get to the golf course a lot. This is how my wife will talk to me when she wants me to listen..."Honey"...."It does not matter if you play golf or you are dancing, your core strength is what matters, it's flexibility and stability". With her wearing leotards I had to sit and listen. "The first thing you have to do is tighten up your abs as all the power comes from your center". With that she showed me how my abdominals effect my hips and back. She added that I would have to make sure and stretch before beginning to play, the greater your flexibility and strength the better you will feel during play. She made perfect sense and who was I to argue with her. Even though she does not know a slice from a divot I took her advice seriously. Being that she was somewhat of an expert at keeping ones body in shape I started to heed her advice. Once a day I worked at strengthening my abs and stretching especially before a golf game. All in all I am trying to lead a healthier lifestyle. The end result is that my golf game has come back with longer more accurate drives and going the full eighteen holes is not a problem and I am not very tired at all. Now my buddies from college are envious, of my golf game, my "drop dead gorgeous" wife and of course my core strength (though they'd never admit to that one). Golf injuries can be a thing of the past, stay in shape stretch before tee time, and give a listen to what the little lady has to say.
