Four Thing You Should Know About Selecting a Bareboat Charter

1/ Sail boat or Cruiser Try this quick quiz to help you discover if you are more receptive to sailing or motor cruising

Do I like roughing it or more creature comforts?

Do I get more out of the trip or goal

Communal living is good or private room thanks

sleeping under the stars or who took the chocolate of my pillow

If you preferred the latter alternative to the former for all the questions above you definitely should charter a motor cruiser and not a yacht. If the latter applies a yacht is for you. If you're a combination of both it will probably depend on how long the charter and how long it takes you to go from "this is different" to "get me out of here".

2/ Who and How Many People do I Take Who you take on your boat has a lot to do with how much fun you have no matter where your destination is or how you get there. Even on the bigger yacht conditions are still pretty cramped especially if the weather is a bit ordinary. If you choose a yacht only go with people who you have been in similar tight situations with before or family. You don't want to go on as friends and get of as something less. Motor cruisers are a lot more forgiving especially the bigger ones

3/ What Type of Vessel

The biggest you can afford

The newest you can afford

The finest that you can spend the money on

Purpose built for self skippered charterers if available

Hire a Skipper or Go it Alone If your not that confident in taking charge of the ship you can usually hire a skipper even if it is only for a day. It will add to the cost. My experience as been that the vast majority are fine on a motor cruiser but some experience is needed to sail. In fact most charter companies require some evidence of someone on board having at least completed a pre-sail course. Pick someone in your party who has the following traits

Have good eyesight

Always be aware of his/her surroundings

Be sober while in control of the vessel

Be tolerant of other boater and not in a rush

The word is full of great places to charter a sailing or cruising yacht from the Bahamas to the Greek Islands my favorite place is The Whitsunday Islands of the coast of North Queensland Australia. These days my preferred mode of transport on the water is a motor cruiser. I have had many great days sailing but I do like a few creature comforts if I am out overnight, especially with a few friends. I hope this little article will help yo make the right decision for you. All the best
