Exploiting Power through Spy Cams

Who wouldn't like to be Big Brother? To be the all-seeing, powerful god of all? Well, possibly not "controlling god of everything" but being the all-seeing person would be simply as commanding, don't you think? That may be one reason why there are a lot of concerns with regards to utilizing hidden spy cameras, assault of privacy being one of these. Power is basically something that everyone abhors and, paradoxically, anyone likes. Spy cams, while they are a benefit to a specific individual, may be so damaging to another. They could be an essential tool or something that would put you down.

There's this one circumstance involving a teacher who made use of a hidden camera cloaked as a button to videotape mischevious students in school. The students as well as their families have filed charges against the mentioned teacher for "abusing her authority" and recording the students without their consent. Yes, it was illicit for the teacher to do such, yet if we look at it the other manner, we could notice that what the teacher was practically doing was revealing these behavioral matters to the public so that they could be addressed properly. I'm relatively sure that the Virginia Tech tragedy is still fresh on everyone's minds. Such behavioral inclinations could have been noticed earlier and subsequently stopped the incident from happening. If a covert spy camera is what it takes to avoid such tragic occurrences, then I wouldn't mind teachers recording their students at school in any way.

Nevertheless, there are also some who misuse the advantages of hidden video cameras. I would suppose all are aware of matters of shocking demeanor caught on video that are being utilized to blackmail a person. Or those that obviously invades someone's privacy as in placing covert cameras in locations where surveillance isn't important, i.e. the bathroom or personal quarters for purposes of personal gratification or malicious intent. Stalking utilizing spy video cams is also another form of misuse of this technology.

Yet there is one thing that shocks me. Some homeowners utilize nanny cameras to monitor their baby-sitters and house helpers while they are away. And these nannies are not aware of the existence of the spy camera until they get caught performing some monkey business and dealt with about it. Yet no one seems to be whining. When they get caught mistreating a kid or doing something inappropriate, the issue of the nanny's right to privacy is not raised. It's because the owners have the authority to do whatever they like to secure the family and the house helper did something wrong.

Hence, when is the utilization of hidden surveillance cameras justified and when is it not? Seemingly, the thin red line dividing them is much thinner than we believe. When the person using the surveillance camera is in authority, its utilization is justified. Nevertheless, if choosing to use hidden spy cams would make us safer, then I am for it. Furthermore, why would I be concerned about it when I'm not doing anything that is against the rules or is morally wrong? But as long as they maintain well behind the line, it wouldn't be a concern.
