"The Myth: ""You must have a unique business idea before you go out and start your own business."" I see a lot of new entrepreneurs who believe that they need to come up with a really cool, unique idea for their business before they can get started. They assume that if someone else is already doing what they want to do, that they must be too late and they need to go back to the drawing board and think of a better one. This is often the farthest thing from the truth! Reality: The only thing you must have is a market willing to buy your product. Uniqueness has nothing to do with success. In fact, a successful entrepreneur is often skeptical about totally unique ideas because if it's completely new, they cannot be sure that there is a market for it. The most successful entrepreneurs to date were not always the first on the scene with the ground-breaking product. A great example is Google. Search engines had been around for years before they even started their company, but they found a way to make their product so much better than the others that they are now in the top of their field. Cost of believing the unique business idea myth These almost-entrepreneurs develop an idea, test it and then get disappointed when they find out that someone else is already doing it! They go back to the drawing board to think of another idea, when they could be taking advantage of the fact that someone else is preparing their market for an even better product. Conclusion Don't fool yourself into believing this myth. Be a successful entrepreneur. Find a market for your product first and focus on that. If your product is good enough, then you'll be good to go."
