EMS Warnings Signs of Stroke Awareness

As the warning signs of a stroke are being better understood and awareness increases, changes are also being made within emergency medical services (EMS) systems across the country. Getting treatment to a stroke victim as quickly as possible is paramount to their survival.

The emergency services are aggressively promoting the impact of stroke on a persons well being, in an attempt to help people better recognise stroke symptoms and take appropriate action where necessary.

The warning signs of stroke symptoms include:

An unexplained and sudden numbing sensation or feeling very week in the face, or down one side of the body.

A sudden loss of vision, or dimness (like the lights being turned down) specifically if it's just in one eye.

Inability to speak fluently or a complete loss of speech. It is understood that stroke victims are well aware of what is happening to them when they are experiencing a stroke, but are unable to communicate their predicament as their words are either mumbled or they are unable to speak at all.

Intense and sudden headaches for no apparent reason.

Unexplained dizziness, unsteadiness or sudden falls, especially with any of the other symptoms mentioned above.

The package being introduced by the EMS is aimed at educating and empowering everybody who plays any role within the realm of supporting a stroke victim. From call handlers, to paramedics, to medical staff, and even the scientists and research staff. The end result is a system that can get the support to a victim as quickly as possible to ensure their chances of stroke recovery are as high as possible.

Recent studies and surveys have discovered that on average, a person who had experienced a stroke waited 2 hours before calling for help. Reducing this time is vital to increasing the odds of recovering from a stroke, and that is one of the main focus points in educating people about the signs of stroke and its symptoms.

When the call for assistance arrives at the emergency communication center, the emergency medical dispatchers have updated protocols for dealing with stroke patients, and paramedics on the scene now have specific stroke protocols to follow when attending patients.

They are able to assess patients on the spot and make informed judgements due to their knowledge of stroke symptoms, and are able to make detailed reports to physicians and medical departments on route to hospital. The end result is a very streamlined and efficient service for identifying signs of a stroke, managing the stroke symptoms and increasing the odds of survival and recovery for the victim.

The survival of stroke patients is dependent on a team approach to care. Stroke care starts with the patient recognizing the warning signs and symptoms of a stroke and activating the EMS system as soon as possible. It really is critical that a stroke victim receive medical attention as quickly as possible to increase their chances of survival.
