It was on the eve of Christmas. It is still vivid in my memory. It was one of life’s most intriguing moments. Till this date, it sends a deep sense of shock right down my spine. Like everybody, I am sure you would want to know as to what happened on that fateful day. I am a person, like all married men, who spends 75% of my life at the work place. We spend the rest 25% of our lives being trampled to death by our beloved partners for reasons that are obvious to you and me. The day before Christmas – there was nothing unique about it that we could pack our bags and leave the office premises early. My cell phone kept ringing displaying a number that I cannot afford to forget even after I reach my grave. It was the year-end and a late evening. I was busy preparing our company’s financial statement. You always know that balance sheets never tally and especially at a time when things should be going fine. I said “No”. I just decided that I pack up my bag and carry the work home. 95% of the work was done. It was the last bit that was literally taking the life out of me. Murphy’s Law seems to be taking the true shape today - Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. I slowly packed my laptop and left the premises. When I reached home, it was late in the evening. I slowly made my way into my home. Things were wearing a deserted look. I slowly made to the swimming pool. There in one remote corner sat my beloved. I never knew what was in store for me. She was upset for obvious reasons. Standing at a distance, I asked her if something was wrong. A glare and she was already charging at me. Even before I realised as to what was happening, she frisked my laptop and the next moment I saw it lying at the bottom of the pool. My blood froze. Flabbergasted, I didn’t know how to react to the situation. All my data was gone. How was I going to answer my company and the millions of investors who had invested in us? Without a second thought, I quickly dived to the bottom of the pool and retrieved my laptop to savage the last bit of data left, if any. Drenched, I quickly rushed to my room, plugged in the laptop and switched it on. The screen was blank and so was my future. I called for the heavens to show me a way out of it. Was there a way out? I felt my pulse running low. It was then something struck me. I called on my friend John, who was the IT manager with our company. I begged his pardon for calling up on Christmas Eve and explained my situation. John, cool as he always is, directed me to a company that could help me out of this. I rushed with the laptop to them and explained my situation over to them. They assured me that this is something that can be easily sorted out and there was really nothing to be perturbed about. Further, they convinced me that they have witnessed worse situations than this and that this was not at all a matter of concern. I slowly made myself comfortable on a chair and waited patiently. By every passing moment, my heartbeat grew louder and louder. An hour passed. The manager came up to me and handed over a CD to me. I was surprised. I asked him as to what happened to all my data. He gave me a smile. He said that it was all there on the CD. I gave him a huge hug and thanked him for the timely help. What they gave me back, was not the data alone. It was my life. This was my first-of-a-kind experience and the most unforgettable one as well. But now that I know of this service, I can now guide and help people who find themselves in similar situations.
