Sometimes I envy my dog. While I'm busy juggling the day's unending problems, he's enjoying a good nap or exploring this, that, or the other thing. What he isn't telling me is that I might spend a little more time taking his needs into account, including making sure he's getting proper nutrition. When you buy dog food do you look for the least expensive brand or the one with the happiest looking dog on the box or bag? It's worth taking a little time to figure out which brands are really best for your pet. Some are better than others and some can even be poor choices. Different breeds an sizes of dogs are often susceptible to specific ailments and proper nutrition can be vital in keeping your pet healthy and happy. Much is made of comparing labels on the bags or cans of dog food. So we read a label, it doesn't make any particular sense to us (although we might be tempted to try it ourselves), and feel we haven't learned much. So we read a label on another brand and it doesn't seem all that different. It doesn't really help that the pet food manufacturer will put lots of effort into proper packaging to make the product appealing to us, and by extension, to our dog. In truth, there is a wealth of information in the labels but we have to make a bit of an effort to figure out just what the ingredients mean for the dog, You have to start with the dog and figure out what it's needs are first. Breed sometimes plays a significant role but most often it is the size of the dog and its age that is of real importance. Dog food brands often specifically target puppies, mature dogs and \"seniors\" as well as targeting dogs from petite to very large. It isn't all about nutrition of course. A happy dog is one who is definitely part of the family. In other words you show affection and spend some time with Fido. A good walk never hurts. You'll probably find your dog comes to expect it after awhile but remember it's good for you too. Beagles love to sniff of everything sniffable on a walk and border collies never tire of chasing a ball that is kicked. A good balance of proper diet, play, and attention makes for a happy dog. Whatever effort you put into your pet's well being is paid in full just watching them go about their daily business. Dogs spend a certain about of time every day conserving energy, i.e. sleeping. Then their off attending to many necessary chores, lots of places to go things to explore and goodies to sample, if we let them. So when you get right down to it, figuring our what your dog needs really isn't all that hard. It's just that we often haven't made the effort, feeling it would be too much work or we wouldn't know where to start. Read the labels again. Where was the food made and what's in it? Is there any ingredient that your pet has an allergic reaction too? Soon you'll have a pretty good idea of which brand seems best suited for your pet. Now you can look at all the bags and packages showing healthy, happy dogs, but you now know which package contains the product that suits your dog well. Don't overdo it but a little bag of treats or a nice bone on occasion is a welcome change for your best friend. Don't forget the daily walk!
