Choosing The Right Soft Toy

Knowing where to look on the soft toy shelf in the toys and games shop

But, visit even a small toy shop and there are bound to be a lot of soft toys to choose from. Unless the child can specifically choose their own toy, there is no way of knowing which soft toy will become their friend and which one will end up on a shelf in their bedroom. One tip here is to ask the parents what their child likes to do. If they like elephants, for example, then a stuffed elephant may go down well. If they like Bob the Builder, then a character soft toy may suit them.

Knowing which kind of soft toy to choose

With so many soft toys to choose from, efficient shoppers will already have an idea of what to buy. If in doubt (and the child likes TV -- let’s face it, few don’t!) then look at character soft toys. There are all kinds of options here from old favourites such as Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters through to characters from modern TV shows such as In the Night Garden.

Most kids will like general soft toys as well. Nothing beats a friendly teddy bear, soft doll or monkey. Nowadays, the animal soft toy ranges are huge and incredibly true to life. A bug loving boy that ‘hates’ teddies may love a beetle or spider soft toy. A dinosaur mad toddler may want to carry his furry (but fierce!) T-Rex with him everywhere!

Soft toys aren’t just good for younger kids -- older kids, teenagers and even adults can have a lot of fun with them as well. In older years it may be that the child wants to start up a collection and there are many sets of collectable soft toys to choose from. Older girls may like to collect Beanie Babies and classic teddy bears.

Making sure that the soft toy is safe

Don’t buy any soft toy without checking that it is suitable for the age of the child (some classic and collectable toys may not be right for young children). Also, make sure that it has passed a safety test and therefore carries the British Standards Kite Mark, Lion Mark or CE rating.

Conclusion

Soft toys are a great option for all ages and sexes. There is more chance that the toy will be well received if it matches one of the child’s interests or if they don’t already own something similar. To keep the parents happy make sure that the toy is washable -- if the child likes it then it is bound to get as grubby as they do!
