Where cleaning carpets is concerned, there has to be hundreds of remedies and ways to get rid of odors, stains, grease, shading, carpet stitch damage, dirt and what have you. There are also several known tips that housewives and professional cleaners have come up with in order to replace those "when in doubt, use cleaning solution" remedies. Below are some of those tips and hopefully, from the list, you may be able to determine for yourself which ones work best. Stains Let's face it: for carpets and upholstery, the most common enemy is the everyday spill. It can be a range of all sorts of liquids from water to something as sticky as honey. The spill can be from food sauces like spaghetti and mushroom soup. Whatever the spill is, it will definitely leave something behind after cleaning up. Cleaning those stains aren't so difficult. The first carpet cleaning tip, of course, is to not let any spill settle. It should be wiped up immediately to minimize the stain amount that may be left behind. The next tip is to use water to clean up whatever you can of the spill first before using any type of detergent or other cleaning measure. You won't waste any detergent if it's not needed in the first place. Yet another tip is that if you are going to use household items such as rubbing alcohol, vinegar or ammonia, then mix them with water first. These chemicals are too harsh and may damage the colors of your carpet if used in their pure form. Odors on Carpets Spills and stains can not only ruin carpets, it can also develop bad smells and odor which could be hard to remove. Carpets that have long been kept in cool and damp places and have not been aired out for some time can also develop foul odor. In order to remove the old stale odor from carpets, wash your carpet in mild scented detergent or soap and conditioner and dry it under the heat of the sun. However, always be careful to thoroughly dry the carpet as dampness in the material will only add to the odor. Freshening sprays are also good ways to get rid of the smell. Dents A damage in your carpets is probably the last thing you want to deal with. This holds true especially if you have furniture on your carpets. Most likely, your carpets could develop dents where your grandfather's clock used to be on. Couches, tables and other furniture can flatten areas on your carpet. The first tip is to have it checked by any carpet cleaning and repair experts. But for the homebody who likes to keep busy, all that is needed is a steam iron and a brush with tough bristles. While applying steam to the dented area (without letting the iron touch the carpet), you can brush up the threads of the carpet and they will slowly start to loosen up and stand again as the rest of the threads in the carpet do. This is a simple trick but does need a fair amount of patience especially if the dent has been there for some time.
