Nowadays, even people without email, or Internet, access, or even without a computer, can share your digital photographs, via a digital photo frame – the digital successor to the conventional photo frame – allowing photographs to be transferred directly from a digital camera, and displayed on a bright, colourful LCD screen. Key Features The thin LCD, or “Liquid Crystal Display”, screen of a digital photo frame is, by far, its most important component, and the size, and other characteristics, of the screen will largely determine the overall quality, and price of the frame. The size of the screen, in itself, should not be too much of an issue, although it should be large enough to be comfortably viewed, in whichever location you choose for it, and relative to the quality, or “resolution”, of the photographs that you wish to display. The Aigo 216 Digital Photo Frame, for example, features a 5.6 inch display. The resolution of the screen – the number of individual “pixels” which it is capable of displaying – is likely to be more of an issue. Resolution determines the level of detail that you can expect to see in a digital photograph displayed on the screen, and, therefore, the higher the figure, or figures, quoted, the higher the overall quality of the image displayed. Resolution may be quoted as a single, total number of pixels, or “megapixels” – 1 million pixels, and “Mp”, for short – or as the number of rows and columns, such as “800 x 600”, or similar. Some digital photo frames do also offer some rather “clever” functionality, above and beyond simply displaying digital photographs. You can, for example, choose from a portrait, or landscape, display, rotate images, adjust the interval between photographs, and add professional, transition effects, such as fading. Some frames also you to accompany your photographs with music, or voiceover, in MP3 format, which is reproduced on tiny speakers within the frame, itself. Many frames also include a timing function, so that the frame can be turned on during the day, and off at night, without user intervention. The Aigo 216 Digital Photo Frame, for example, offers a choice of portrait, or landscape options, and those for static, or slideshow display. Aigo as a Manufacturer Aigo, originally established in 1993, is a leading brand in its own domestic Chinese marketplace, with a reputation for innovation in its product ranges – which include portable storage, digital products and computer peripherals – and based on a philosophy that technology should be simple, yet pleasurable, to its customers. Aigo opened offices in the UK some 3 years ago, as part of an ambitious development plan for Europe, which also include offices in Germany, and Spain, and the brand has experienced growth of 40% in each year since. Conclusion Digital photo frames allow you to store just one, or two digital photographs, or a whole collection, display photographs singly, or as a slideshow, and to change them as often, or as infrequently, as you like. They can make ideal gifts, for example, for, perhaps, elderly relatives who have no interest in, or inclination towards, computers, but just want to look at your digital photographs in the way that they have always looked at photographs.
