It's true that in a way I brought it upon myself. Years of fierce competition on the sporting field seemed like a good idea at the time, but I'm beginning to feel the fall-out in this body of mine, once upon a time the well-oiled machine! Aches and pains and a family history of arthritis weigh heavily on my mind as I attempt to find relief for my joint pain. Can anything be done or is this just the price I have to pay for a life of much physical activity? Well, I now believe there's relief at hand in the form of two supplements called glucosamine and chondroitin. Taken in combination, these winning supplements seem to be winning lots of grateful fans. Wise mechanics will tell you that a machine's output is dependent on the measures taken to prevent failure and breakdown. Just like machines, our bodies need to be cared for and maintained for maximum output. Interestingly, it is not usually our muscles or bone structures which are the cause of our niggling pains but rather the joints themselves. It is the joints which hinge the muscular and skeletal systems together. They are very, very important. I have watched the ageing, as well as fellow sportspeople suffer joint pain after years of high physical activity, for far too long. It had always been in the back of my mind that one day joint pain and arthritis could plague me due to excessive and constant training and competition. Yet it seemed to rocket quickly to the forefront of my thoughts as seemingly simultaneously my father and father-in-law, both elite sportsmen in their day, started suffering from intense pain caused by degeneration with joints such as knees, neck, elbows and shoulders. Their physicians presented them with two options: invasive means involving joint replacements and the like or proven supplements that improved joint function and relieved pain. The results of choosing the latter were and have been remarkable. The key? The highly researched dietary supplements glucosamine and chondroitin. Those people who have suffered from joint degeneration or arthritis are all too aware of the debilitating effect of these conditions. Sufferers are often confused as to the cause of their pain. In layman's terms, often the combination of a diminishing level of fluids and a cartilage breakdown has a painful and corrosive effect. This in turn affects the easy sliding movement and without the necessary slipperiness, scraping and grating occurs. As pain increases, movement naturally becomes restricted. Osteoarthritis and other forms of join disfunction are the curse of many people, not just the elderly. This really came home to me recently whilst watching a former elite sportsman (who represented his nation in Rugby League not so many years ago) engaged in the simple pursuit of putting his socks on, despite having maintained a high level of fitness. He was in such discomfort that he was struggling to complete the task, thanks to terrible joint pain in his back and knees. But the good news for him and thousands like him, is that glucosamine and chondroitin can radically reduce the discomfort of sufferers of joint pain and also retard the onset of arthritis. Recent news has caused much rejoicing in the ranks of the sufferers of joint pain. Recent studies confirm that glucosamine and chondroitin do provide long awaited pain relief and much needed hope to sufferers. According to the Council for Responsible Nutrition, the clinical trial sponsored by the National Institue of Health found that significant pain relief was achieved by arthritis sufferers who used these two dietary supplements in combination. Glucosamine and chondroitin are substances found naturally in the body. Glucosamine is also believed to play a role in cartilage formation and repair. Chondroitin is a part of a large protein molecule that provides cartilage elasticity. The combination of both in a single supplement greatly enhances the effectiveness of relieving pain and increasing joint movement. Many users state that it can take up to two months of use until they fully feel the effects of their use. But it is well worth the wait, they say! Naturally I do not recommend that you rely upon supplements alone to provide all the answers to your individual situation. Gentle physical activity can also assist in increasing movement and reducing joint pain. Ensuring that you stretch and warm up your joints should be a priority for everyone when exercising. I do suggest, though, that you combine your present regime with a supplement which combines glucosamine and chondroitin and just see how much your pain is reduced. When warming up and stretching muscles and joints, it is important that you do not overstretch and push yourself too early in the exercise session. Commence with long slow movements as opposed to vigorous sharp activities. Hold the stretch if possible for at least 10-15 seconds. Include in your exercise session a wide range of movements depending on your age and mobility as well as some isometrics and some appropriate weight bearing activities. Is there hope for the millions of arthritis and joint pain sufferers out there? I believe so. The research and the anecdotal evidence both seem to be pointing to two supplements called glucosamine and chondroitin. Taken in combination, they are fast becoming the light at the end of the tunnel for myself and for anyone else who's tired of being in discomfort.
