It's certainly not easy maintaining a household given the ever-increasing costs of basic utilities. It's expensive enough just putting food on the table, but you also have to make sure that your income can always stretch to paying for the major utilities such as electricity, gas and water. If your household is like most then it's likely that your kids contribute significantly to your utility costs. Given this, it only makes sense to get them on board when it comes to reducing these costs. And when you do this, you can feel good about doing your bit to save the planet too. It is no secret that kids love electronic games, as this is a great way to pass the time and is surely fun. If your house has a video game console or computer that you allow your kids to play games on, try to assign a time when the kids can play with it. You shouldn't let your kids play with their video games around the clock, as this will result in soaring electricity bills. Remember that when playing on video game consoles the kids will also use the television. This means a double helping of electricity will be consumed. Give strict and clear guidelines to your children concerning acceptable useage of computer games. It is a good idea to limit them to two hours game playing a day during the week and, say, four hours during the weekend. Don't forget to make sure your kids do their homework first before allowing them to use their games consoles and play their computer games. Another thing you should do is ask your kids to unplug their electronic gadgets when not in use, as these devices eat up electricity even when in stand-by mode. This practice can also have the desirable side effect of encouraging them to tidy things away after use. Another of the Earth's most precious resources that you should encourage your childen to take care of is water. Although bath time can be synonymous with play time for children you should limit use of the bath and the shower. Try to use a child-size bath for younger children rather than the full-size one in your bath room. Teeth brushing is another area that's ripe for water-saving advice. Tell your kids to close the faucet in the middle of brushing and just fill up a small cup with water when gargling. In order to help control the cost of your utility bills, the kids need to be involved in working towards efficiency. It is always helpful when a child becomes responsible at an early age, as he or she will carry this teaching with them to adulthood. Parents should also realize that maintaining a household is basically a team effort and all of the family members should play their part.
